Courses & the sailing school
Browse a club's course schedule, register for a course, and track your progress in My courses.
Some clubs run a sailing school on Zeil — a schedule of courses you can browse and register for. If your club has this turned on, you'll find courses on its public schedule and, once you've registered, under My courses.
Browsing the schedule
A club's course schedule lives at yourclub.zeilapp.com/courses and is
open to anyone — you don't need to sign in to look. It lists every
published course that's still open for registration, with its summary,
dates, and number of sessions. Once a course's start date has passed — or the
course has ended — it drops off the schedule; a course with no dates set stays
listed. A course that needs sign-off before you're in shows an "approval
required" note.
Some courses are members only — reserved for full club members, like a club racing clinic. They don't appear on the public schedule; if you're an active member (or admin) of the club and signed in, they show up marked "members only", with a Members only pill on the course page. Visitors and students can't see or register for them. If a members-only course link reaches you while you're signed out, the page shows no course details — just a Sign in to view this course prompt; sign in and you land straight back on the course.
Open any course to see its full page:
- A description of what you'll learn.
- The instructors teaching it.
- Its sessions — each marked Classroom or On water, with the date, time (in the club's timezone), and location.
- Any course materials the club has made public.
- How many seats are left — a course with a cap shows "N seats left" or "Full".
Registering for a course
From a course page, use the button in the footer to sign up. What it says depends on how the club set the course up:
Register or request a place
- Open enrolment — the button reads Register for this course and you're enrolled straight away.
- Approval required — the button reads Request a place. Your request goes to the club for review and sits as pending until a club admin approves or declines it.
If you're new to the club and your profile is missing your name or phone number, the course page asks for them above the button — the club keeps both on file for every student. If you're not signed in yet, the form asks for both, plus your email address (see the next step). Some courses also require a mailing address, because the club sends their course documents (certificates, workbooks) by post. On those courses this applies to everyone — existing members included — so if your profile doesn't have one, the course page asks for it and the button stays disabled until you fill it in; courses that don't mail anything skip the address entirely. Everything you enter is saved to your profile when you register, so you won't be asked again next time.
Some courses also show an optional voucher code field, for clubs that run the course through a partner discount or voucher program — enter the code you were given, or leave it blank. It's never required and doesn't affect whether you can register.
Some clubs require you to accept a waiver first. If so, the course page shows the waiver text above the button, and you must tick "I have read and agree to the waiver above" before you can register. If the club updates the waiver while you have the page open, you'll be asked to review the new text and agree again.
No account yet? Confirm your email
You don't need an account to start registering. If you're not signed in, the course page shows the same registration form with one extra field — your email address — and the button reads Continue — we'll email you a link. Submitting doesn't register you yet: Zeil emails you a confirmation link, and clicking it signs you in (see Signing in) and lands you right back on the course page with the form already filled in from what you entered — press the register button there to finish. The link is good for 2 hours; if it expires, just fill in the form again. And if the club updated its waiver in the meantime, you'll be asked to read and agree to the new text before registering.
If you weren't already part of the club, signing up for a course adds you as a student — enough to take courses, without the booking and crew tools a full member has.
You're registered
Once you're in, the course page shows You're registered, and the course appears under My courses. Zeil also emails you a confirmation right away — that your seat is secured, or that your request was received. On an approval-required course, you'll get another email when the club approves or declines your request. If the course was full the moment you tried, Zeil tells you it's now full — pick another or check back later.
A place is held while you wait
On an approval-required course, your pending request holds a seat so the course can't be over-filled while an admin decides. If you're declined, that seat is released.
My courses
My courses (/my-courses) is your list of every course you've registered
for, each with a status:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Enrolled | You're in — you'll see the sessions and any materials. |
| Pending approval | Your request is waiting on the club's decision. |
| Completed | You've finished the course. |
| Declined | Your request wasn't accepted. |
| Withdrawn | You were taken off the course. |
Open any course from the list to jump back to its page. Once you're enrolled,
you also see the materials the club marks for enrolled students — not just the
public ones. Each session on the course page also gets an Add to calendar
button: choose Google Calendar (a prefilled event) or Apple Calendar (an
.ics download that also works with Outlook and most other calendar apps) to
put the session — with its time and location — into your own calendar. A
session with its own location (a classroom, say) keeps it; otherwise the event
uses the club's location, the same way a sail does.
Below your own courses, an Open for registration section lists the published courses you haven't registered for — each with its summary, dates, number of sessions, and an "approval required" note where it applies — so your next course is one tap away. Like the public schedule, it skips courses that have already started or ended. A Browse the course schedule button underneath takes you to the full schedule. The schedule is a public page, outside the app's tabs — so while you're signed in with the club, a My courses link at the top of the schedule (and of every course page) brings you straight back.
You can also reach My courses from the Profile area — the My courses row, next to My sails. On the phone, that row is the way in for club admins, who have an Admin tab in place of the Courses one.
Staying in the loop by email
While a course runs, Zeil keeps enrolled students posted over email:
- A welcome packet as the start date nears, with the session schedule and your instructors.
- A reminder before each session.
- A note when a session is cancelled.
- When new material is added, an in-app notification right away, plus a line in your next daily digest email.
If the club reschedules an upcoming session, you'll get an in-app notification that it moved — check the course page for the new time.
These fall under the Course updates category of your notification preferences. Your club may also announce when a new course opens for registration — that arrives in your daily digest under the separate New course announcements category.
Finishing a course
When you complete a course, a club admin marks you completed. You get a notification and an email letting you know, and any certifications you earned are granted at the same time — the email records the awards, and you'll see them on your profile alongside any others. A combined course covering more than one certification awards whichever of them you passed, so you can finish with some but not all of them. See Certifications & skipper status for what certifications unlock.
